I have always been the kind of person who believed in love a little too deeply. The hopeless romantic type. I used to think that one day I would look into someone’s eyes and just know. And she would know too. Not the kind of love that happens instantly, but the kind that takes its time. We would make things difficult for each other. We would question what we felt. There would be moments when we would hate how much the other person mattered. But somehow, after all of it, we would still find our way back to each other.
The first time I saw her, it felt like a cool breeze on a burning summer day. Something about her felt calm and beautiful in a way I cannot explain. Before I even spoke to her, I had already imagined the whole story in my head. How we would slowly fall in love. How everything would unfold. I did everything I thought was right. And then one day, I told her how I felt.
That was the day I learned that life does not always turn out the way you dream it will. Sometimes you give your heart honestly and still lose. And when that happens, it hurts more than you expect.
I picked up the broken pieces of myself and kept moving forward. A little quieter. A little more careful. A little less fearless than before.
Years passed, but that heartbreak never fully left me. I did what most men are taught to do. Stay silent. Push it down. Pretend you are fine and move on. But the truth is, it stays with you. It changes the way you love. The way you trust. The way you hold yourself back before you let someone get too close.
For a long time, pain made me distant from love. Cynical, even. But recently, when I first spoke to you, something in me felt alive again. It reminded me that the hopeless romantic part of me never really disappeared. It was just hiding behind the fear of being hurt again.
I wish I was brave enough to tell you all of this. But that heartbroken version of me still pulls me back sometimes, reminding me of what it felt like to fall and not be caught.
Still, I hope that someday I find the courage again. The kind of courage I had when I was younger and less afraid of pain. Maybe you will reject me too. Maybe it will hurt all over again. But somehow, I still feel like it would be worth it.
